Wallonia is synonymous with nature, parks, water, wildlife, unusual discoveries and good food. To visit this region is to set off on an adventure and a land full of history and heritage, with beautiful museums, ancient cathedrals and brewers’ abbeys.
It is always a meeting place for permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, commemorative days and activities of all kinds for the transmission and preservation of knowledge. For example, the Wallonia Museum Portal offers a wide range of ideas.
Everyone has a hard time choosing between all the beautiful villages and places in this part of Belgium. However, to start getting to know this southern side of the country, we can begin with:
- NAMUR: The capital of Wallonia is only a short distance from Brussels. It is a fortified city surrounded by nature and crossed by the river Meuse. Its citadel, its cathedral and its museums such as the Museum of Ancient Art or the Archaeological Museum attract more and more visitors of all ages.
- WATERLOO: This village is most famous for being the site of the battlefield where the great Emperor Napoleon was defeated by a coalition of European forces. But besides that, the tastings of local products are delicious, such as their sugar cake, their beer, or their typical hazelnut liqueur.
- DINANT: It is historic as it is instagrammable. The town runs along the Meuse river and under the medieval watch of its fortress. The tower of its collegiate church is an architectural delight and its Leffe beer abbey tells the story of its inhabitants. Moreover, only the bravest can taste its famous biscuit, la couque de Dinant.
- THE GROTTES DE HAN: This is literally a journey to the origins of the world. One of the most beautiful geological caves in Europe, a journey to the centre of the Earth with countless natural treasures. Outside in its natural park, we can find the so-called Big Five of Europe: brown bear, Eurasian lynx, European bison, grey wolf and the always cute wolverine.
